Finding the perfect guitar teacher is easy if you know what you want.
Here’s some tips to help you find the right one.
Think About Your Guitar Goals

- What are your big goals?
Think big! What would you like to be able to do on guitar eventually?
- Play songs for your kids or jam with friends?
- Write songs or join a band?
- Play for stadiums full of cheering fans?
A good guitar teacher will help you set small goals along the way to reach your big goals. Having an idea of those big goals will help them do that.
- What kinds of music do you want to play?
Think about what kinds of music you like to listen to and would enjoy playing. List 3-5 example song – even if you think they’re way out of your range right now.
A good teacher will also turn you onto some new stuff too!
Research Potential Guitar Teachers
- Make a list of potential teachers using a search engine.
Do they offer the type of lessons you want? In-person, online, kids, adults? Do they teach the styles of music you want to learn?
- Ask friends for referrals.
If you’ve got friends who play, ask how they like their teachers and if they’ll refer you.
- Look for reviews and their online presence.
Are you seeing lots of students giving 5-star reviews? Do they have a good website that highlights what they do?

Focus On Expertise

Not all guitar teachers are alike. Great players aren’t always great teachers, so look for someone with both skills. Some focus on kids vs adults or advanced vs beginner guitarists.
A good teacher should blend technique with step-by-step music theory, making learning easier and more fun.
Get A Consultation
Before signing up, talk with the teacher online or by phone to see if they’re a good fit. They should ask about your goals—whether that’s jazz, rock, pop, fingerstyle, or simply enjoying guitar for life.
When a teacher listens, your lessons become personal, fun, and focused on your journey.

What To Ask?
Most people only think to ask,
“How much does it cost?” and “When are the lessons?”
Those questions are important, but they’re not the MOST important
because you want a great guitar learning experience.
- Does the teacher teach the music styles you want to play? Have a list of 3-5 example goal songs you'd like to learn.
- Do they have a plan for lessons, or is it like, "What do you feel like doing today?" (Tip: A plan is WAY better!)
- Do they teach you how to practice effectively?
- What's their professional background as a musician and a teacher?
Then, when the discussion comes to price and scheduling,
you’ll have more information to make your decision.
